Devotional: Portraits Of Black Women Singers
Inspired by Sonia Boyce's Devotional Series, this display
celebrates Black female singers in British entertainment from the
early twentieth century to the present, and includes the
photography of Kofi Allen, Albert Watson, Andy Earl and Bob
Collins. 18 photographs, some from the National Portrait Gallery's
own collection, alongside significant loans, have been chosen to
highlight the Devotional Series.
To add
to this Sonia Boyce will install a new rendition of the Series in
a two-week project where she will inscribe 170 names of Black
female icons in British entertainment onto the walls. As part of
the installation a speaker will play the music of these artists,
allowing visitors to make connections between the names and the
popular music produced by these women.
Collaborating with Tate Britain, ICA, Palace of Westminster,
Westminster Archives, Westminster Council and the National
Gallery, the Devotional Series is a part of the Bicentennial
commemorations of the act to abolish the Atlantic Slave Trade.
